Some general aspects of Psychosomatic Medicine
Depression or anxiety can be the expression of an underlying psychosomatic
disorder. The reasons for a patient seeing a physician are often cardiac,
pulmonary
or abdominal symptoms, headache, back pain and sexual problems.
These can also include bulimia and different forms of addictive behaviour. Combined
medical and psychotherapeutic treatment is often required. In Germany
approximately 25% of the urban population suffer from psychogenic diseases.
Approximately 10% have fallen ill to such a degree that they require specialist
psychosomatic care. Within the framework of the German statutory health
insurance system, procedures such as analytic psychotherapy, psychodynamic
psychotherapy, behaviour therapy and different relaxation methods are widely
implemented. These procedures are part of multimodal concept of diagnosis and
treatment, including drug treatment where necessary.
